Cricket Queensland in Mackay – Marsh Sheffield Shield
Dr. Dougal Middleton recently had the opportunity to spend a week working with Cricket Queensland Men’s team in Mackay as their match-day team doctor.
In warm and humid weather the Sheffield Shield match is played over 4 days against Victoria.
Working closely with Head Physiotherapist, Martin Love, he got to have several discussions around the types of injuries sustained by elite and non-elite cricketers and their management.
Queensland Cricket has published several research articles looking into lumbar spine stress injuries/fractures in their athletes and these injuries are of particular interest for Dougal.
Queensland came away with a comfortable win in the Sheffield Shield match and this was followed by a Marsh One-Day Cup game – which unfortunately Queensland lost.
It was a fantastic experience for Dr Dougal to work within high performance cricket for the first time and something he hopes to continue to do during his career.
